A few years ago, YouTube decided to track the amount of time a person spent watching a video so that the company could help make YouTube "a more engaging place for creators and fans" . While YouTube’s success in doing so can be left up to debate, the decision to track the amount of time spent has also lead to YouTube reaching a major milestone last year.
In an announcement made by YouTube themselves, the video content streaming site announced that a billion hours of YouTube content is consumed by people around the world every single day. To put that in perspective, a billion hours is equivalent to over 100,000 years.
Seeing as YouTube has been experiencing steady growth over the years, it isn’t too farfetched to say that the video streaming site could break further milestones over the course of the year. That being said, there are some parts of the service that could do with improvements, like the highly controversial Content ID system that YouTube implements. Whatever the case, YouTube’s billion hour milestone is genuinely impressive.
